PHS 1 - Pre-Flight Planning9 steps
Weather Briefing (METAR / TAF)REVIEWEDNOTE: Approved for day and night VFR and IFR, non-icing. The turbocharger makes the high teens usable, so check winds aloft and freezing levels for the whole climb. |
NOTAMsREVIEWED |
Service Ceiling and OxygenCHECKEDCAUTION: Service ceiling is 20,000 ft. Plan supplemental oxygen for the altitudes the turbocharged engine makes available. |
Fuel RequiredCALCULATEDNOTE: Total capacity 77 US gal, usable 72 US gal (36 per wing tank), unusable 5 US gal. Refer to the Operating Data Manual for cruise fuel flow. |
Weight and BalanceWITHIN LIMITSCAUTION: Maximum weight 2,900 lb, higher than the normally aspirated Arrow III. Maximum baggage compartment load 200 lb, maximum useful load 1,090 lb. |
Takeoff and Landing DistanceCALCULATEDNOTE: Continental TSIO-360 six-cylinder turbocharged engine, 200 HP maintained from sea level to 12,000 ft density altitude. Range 695 nm at maximum payload. |
Charts and Flight PlanPREPARED |
Complex Aircraft ReviewCOMPLETENOTE: Retractable gear, constant-speed propeller and a fixed-wastegate turbocharger. Gear retraction limit 111 KIAS, gear extension limit 133 KIAS. An automatic gear extension system lowers the gear below approximately 87 KIAS when power is reduced below about 14 inHg. |
VariantCONFIRMEDNOTE: The Turbo Arrow III has the conventional tail; the Turbo Arrow IV has the T-tail. Both are covered by this manual.

YokeBACK PRESSURE TO ROTATE SMOOTHLY TO CLIMB ATTITUDE |
Gear (short field technique)UPNOTE: Short field technique: after clearing the ground accelerate to 59-68 KIAS depending on weight, then raise the gear. Maximum gear retraction speed 111 KIAS. |
Obstacle Clearance Climb79 KIAS, THEN 97 KIASNOTE: Short field technique: accelerate to the gear-up best angle speed of 79 KIAS, slowly retract the flaps and climb past the obstacle, then accelerate to the gear-up best rate speed of 97 KIAS.
PHS 12 - Climb4 steps
Best Rate of Climb (gear up, flaps up)97 KIASNOTE: At 2,750 lb. Gear down, flaps up is 79 KIAS. |
Best Angle of Climb (gear up, flaps up)79 KIASNOTE: At 2,750 lb. Gear down, flaps up is 73 KIAS. |

PHS 13 - Cruise5 steps
Cruise Power75 PERCENT MAXIMUMNOTE: Normal maximum cruising power is 75 percent of rated horsepower. Refer to the Operating Data Manual for cruise power settings. The manual's tutorial uses 28 inHg and 2,300 RPM as a typical cruise setting. |
MixtureLEAN AT 75 PERCENT POWER OR LESSCAUTION: If there is any doubt as to the power being used, set the mixture to FULL RICH for all operations. |
Alternate AirON IF INDUCTION ICING IS EXPECTED |
Fuel TanksALTERNATE EVERY 15 MINUTESNOTE: The Normal Procedures section calls for alternating tanks at 15-minute intervals for best lateral trim; the tutorial suggests changing every half hour and not exceeding a 10 US gallon imbalance. |
Fuel PumpLO BEFORE SWITCHING TANKSCAUTION: The electric fuel pump must be set to LO before switching tanks and left on for a short period afterwards.
PHS 14 - Descent3 steps
PowerSET AS REQUIRED FOR DESCENT |
Engine PowerAPPLY EVERY 1,500 FTCAUTION: Apply engine power every 1,500 ft to prevent excess engine cooling and spark plug fouling. |
Manifold PressureAVOID BELOW 14 IN HGCAUTION: Avoid prolonged descents with a manifold pressure lower than 14 inHg. Below 14 inHg with airspeed at or below approximately 87 KIAS the automatic gear extension system will lower the landing gear.
