How to Use

2Enter any headwind (positive) or tailwind (negative) component in knots.
3Choose the runway surface condition using the pill buttons.
4Enter the available runway length to get a GO/NO-GO verdict.
5Switch to Advanced mode to override aircraft values and add elevation, temperature, and slope corrections.

Tips

//Density altitude is the single biggest factor at high-elevation airports - a 5000 ft field on a hot day can add 50% or more to the required roll.
//Tailwind has a disproportionate effect - a 10 kt tailwind can increase ground roll by 30% or more, far worse than a 10 kt headwind reduction.
//Upslope runway increases required distance; downslope helps. Add slope data in Advanced mode.
//The 15% safety margin on top of obstacle clearance distance matches typical POH guidance for planning purposes.
//Wet or contaminated surfaces add significant distance - ice can double your ground roll compared to dry pavement.

FAQ

What is density altitude and why does it matter?: Density altitude is pressure altitude corrected for temperature. Hot or high conditions thin the air, reducing engine power and lift - both lengthen takeoff roll. A field at 5000 ft on an ISA+20 day behaves like it is near 8000 ft.
Why is the 50 ft obstacle clearance distance so much longer than ground roll?: After lifting off, the aircraft still needs runway (or clear space) to accelerate and climb to 50 ft - the standard obstacle clearance height used in POH performance tables. This typically adds 30-60% over ground roll alone.
