AIRCRAFT BRIEF
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a three-engine wide-body airliner derived from the DC-10, first flown in 1990 and entering service with Finnair in 1991. Its advanced two-crew glass cockpit, winglets, and reshaped tail eliminated the DC-10's flight engineer and improved range and efficiency. Passenger sales were modest (200 built), but the type found a long second life as a freighter, with FedEx, UPS, and Lufthansa Cargo operating converted and factory-built MD-11Fs.
