Engine Failure In Flight
Immediate actions · 10 steps
- 1Airspeed85 KTS MINIMUM immediately after takeoff, 110 KTS with sufficient altitude
- 2If engine failure occurs immediately after takeoff, landing straight ahead is usually advisable
- 3Turn toward the most favorable landing site
- 4Air Conditioner (if installed)OFF
- 5Fuel Selector ValveSELECT OTHER TANK (feel for detent, check visually)

- 5HandcrankENGAGE AND TURN CCW AS FAR AS POSSIBLE (approximately 50 turns)
- 6Verify GEAR DN and LOCKED lights illuminated and warning horn silent at idle
- 7HandcrankDISENGAGE, THEN STOW; Landing Gear Handle - DO NOT MOVE
- 8LANDING GEAR MOTOR Circuit BreakerDO NOT RESET
- 9Consider the gear UNLOCKED until the airplane is on jacks and the system has been cycled and checked
Electrical Smoke or Fire
Immediate actions · 8 steps
- 1Battery 1 and Alternator 1OFF
- 2Firewall Air ControlPULL (if smoke or fire is present in the engine compartment)
- 3Autopilot and Flight DirectorDISENGAGE
- 4Avionics Switch and all electrical equipment switchesOFF
- 5To dissipate smoke: Firewall Air Control FULL FORWARD (if engine is not the source), wing root and overhead fresh air outlets OPEN
- 6If smoke subsidesLAND AS SOON AS PRACTICAL
- 7If smoke persists: maintain control on standby instruments, Battery 2 and Alternator 2OFF, land as soon as practical
- 8Dissipation of smoke is not sufficient evidence the fire is out
