AIRCRAFT BRIEF

The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt was the heaviest and most powerful single-engine piston fighter of World War II, powered by the 2,535 hp Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp 18-cylinder radial engine. First flying in 1941, it saw extensive combat from 1943 onwards in both Europe and the Pacific, excelling as a high-altitude escort fighter and devastating low-altitude ground attack platform thanks to its exceptional dive speed and ability to absorb punishment. Over 15,636 Thunderbolts were produced, making it the most numerous American fighter of the war.
