AIRCRAFT BRIEF

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19 was the Soviet Union's first production supersonic fighter and the world's first mass-produced aircraft to exceed Mach 1 in level flight. Entering service in 1955, the 'P' variant added the RP-1 Izumrud radar for all-weather interception capability. Though quickly superseded by the MiG-21, it served extensively in the Vietnam War (as the Chinese-built J-6) and proved lethal in dogfights against more modern Western fighters.
