AIRCRAFT BRIEF
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9 'Dora' was the long-nosed development of the Fw 190, mating the airframe to the liquid-cooled Junkers Jumo 213A-1 inverted inline engine to restore high-altitude performance the radial-powered A-series lacked. First flown in 1944 and in service from September of that year, the D-9 could reach about 685 km/h at altitude and, with MW 50 water-methanol injection, its engine produced up to 2,240 hp. Intended as an interim type pending the Ta 152, it proved more than a match for late-war Allied fighters; just over 700 Doras were built before the war ended.
