AIRCRAFT BRIEF

The de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was a British twin-engine combat aircraft built almost entirely of wood, earning it the nickname 'The Wooden Wonder'. Conceived as an unarmed fast bomber that would rely on speed alone for protection, it first flew in November 1940 and by 1941 was one of the fastest operational aircraft in the world, comfortably outrunning the Spitfire Mk II. The FB Mk VI, which first flew in 1942 and entered service in 1943, became the most-produced and most versatile variant, a fighter-bomber armed with four 20mm Hispano cannon and four .303 machine guns that could also carry bombs, rockets and drop tanks. It served with distinction in strike, intruder, anti-shipping and pathfinder roles, including the famous low-level raids on Amiens prison and the Gestapo headquarters in Oslo and Copenhagen.
